The Boys was a series that, upon its release, was distributed by a subsidiary of DC Comics.

Perhaps because there's nothing more amusing than parodying one's old employer, the original author directly used The Seven as a parody of the Justice League, while injecting deep flaws of human nature into the mix.

All the evils of humanity you could imagine are depicted here in extraordinary ways, to the point where it becomes deeply unsettling for the readers, causing the work to receive negative feedback and get canceled after just six issues.

Later on, the author switched to another platform and set his sights on Marvel, parodying the Avengers by creating a "Payback" League, with corresponding X-Men characters, the G-Men.

The characters in this series still present a facade of glamour, while behind the scenes, they are malicious and ugly. Here, it seems that superpowers don't bring light and hope, but instead awaken the darkness of human nature.

The harmfulness of superhumans and the distortion of human nature form the main themes of this work.

The TV adaptation focused heavily on satirizing reality and critiquing the ugly aspects of the political and social environment in the U.S.

This was Alex's first impression of this world.

In his past life, he wasn't particularly interested in it, so he hadn't paid much attention.

What Alex wanted to explore now was the connection between this world and the so-called "pollution" and how to resolve the hidden dangers lurking beneath the surface of this world.

The only useful information he had so far was that this world was born from "pollution," which was deeply tied to the collective mindset of higher-dimensional beings. Although Alex had some suspicions, he needed concrete evidence to understand the specifics.

In addition, the IP address he obtained during his first encounter with the zombie sentry, as Tony Stark had said, might exist in any universe.

From the current state of things, this universe seemed the most likely candidate. This was why Alex had decided that his main focus for investigation would be here.

As for now...

Alex decided to go with the flow for the time being. At least while inhabiting this body, he didn't want to make anyone around him suspect anything strange.

It was 6:30 PM, and the sky had already darkened.

At Anya's house, Alex silently paid his fare and got out of the taxi.

"Alex, I'm over here!"

Just as he steadied himself, a cheerful voice reached Alex's ears. Hearing that voice, he smiled and turned around to greet her.

"You're early, Emma."

Earlier in the afternoon, Alex had already used Professor X's powers.

His powerful telepathy quickly swept across the entire country, and now, the name "Alex" was deeply ingrained in everyone's minds. Anyone who saw this body would instinctively call him Alex, not David.

This wasn't a change in perception, because Charles's power works on the mind, not reality. In the real world, the identity registered for this body is still David, and that can't be changed.

However, Alex had played a little trick. He altered the perception of this name for almost everyone. Of course, this only applied to him, and from that moment on, anyone who saw the name would automatically say "Alex."

The reason Alex did this wasn't just to change a name. He was mainly testing how his powers would function in this world.

Although he now possessed all the abilities of mutants and countless superheroes, how much power he could wield in this world depended on how these abilities were practically applied.

From what he had observed so far, the results seemed pretty good. Most people, unless they were extremely strong in combat or had high resistance to mental powers, couldn't block Professor X's telepathic influence.

At least from the fact that Emma had greeted him normally, it seemed his plan had worked well.

Hearing Alex's response, Emma bounced up to him, grinning as she spoke.

"I just got here too! By the way, guess what? Right after I hung up the phone with you, I gained more followers. I've officially broken my record for most followers gained in a week!"

"Congratulations! I knew you were made for this job," Alex said with a light smile.

"Of course! Now I feel like the star of tomorrow is just around the corner. When I get famous, you're coming to be my assistant, right? I'll definitely give you the highest salary!"

Emma gave Alex's shoulder a heavy pat, wearing an expression that said she would definitely have his back. Then, she looked him up and down before exclaiming.

"Wait a second, it's party night! Why did you come dressed like this?"

Upon hearing that, Alex looked down at his clothes. Since the original body wasn't good at dressing up, his wardrobe was quite limited. After changing out of his work clothes, he just grabbed some casual sportswear.

"What's wrong with this? It's perfectly normal," Alex replied.

"Normal?! Normal is the problem, buddy!" Emma said, rolling her eyes. "Do you know it's Anya's birthday today? Look around, see how everyone else is dressed, and then look at you. My god..."

A party? Alex hadn't heard that word in a long time.

Looking around, most of the young people here were dressed in high-end casual suits, with some girls dressed up extravagantly, like socialites, exuding a heavy dose of hormones.

Alex took a deep breath and shook his head slightly.

"You know I don't like attending events like this. I haven't even saved up for next year's tuition yet. I don't have the spare cash for all this."

Hearing this, Emma wanted to say something, but after opening her mouth, she didn't know how to respond.

When Alex had moved in with his relatives, the two had been neighbors for a time. Although Alex had to move out later for school, their bond hadn't been affected.

Emma knew Alex quite well. At first, his relatives had taken him in because they received subsidies for doing so. But once he reached adulthood and the subsidies stopped, their attitude toward him changed.

Now, Alex paid for his tuition by working part-time, so Emma could understand his sense of helplessness.

After a brief pause, Emma quietly asked, "What about Anya? Isn't she your dream girl? If you ever had a chance to get close to her, tonight's probably it."

Alex sighed. "Forget it. Dreams and reality are a big difference. We're not kids anymore."

He shrugged and pointed at himself.

"Someone like me—an impoverished guy who can barely afford to eat, always worrying about how I'll survive in the future—how can I ever measure up to a girl like Anya?"

Emma followed Alex's gaze toward the mansion in the distance, which was a massive villa.

They had known Anya's family was wealthy, but they hadn't realized just how wealthy she was. She had enough money to rent an entire villa just for her birthday party.

Listening to Alex's words, Emma fell silent, unsure of how to comfort him.

At this moment, Alex lightly nudged her. "Forget about all that. The party's about to start. Let's go in. At least we can have a nice meal tonight, right?"

Emma laughed. "You've got a point. I haven't eaten for two days just for this meal."

Following the crowd, Alex and Emma walked into the villa, chatting and laughing.

Along the way, Alex's outfit certainly attracted a few stares. After all, in a sea of high-end suits, his sportswear stood out like a sore thumb.

However, no one came up to confront him. They just glanced his way and then looked away.

It wasn't hard to guess why. First, they didn't know who Alex really was. Second, those invited to the party were all Anya's friends, so there was no reason to make trouble.

While they were sizing Alex up, Alex was also observing them. Perhaps because of his heightened sensitivity to superpowered individuals, Alex was surprised to realize that quite a few people at the party seemed to have powers.

Although there were many superpowered beings in this world, they were still few in number relative to the general population. Seeing so many in one place made Alex curious.

Once inside the villa, the first thing that greeted him was the energetic but not overly loud music. The rhythm made you want to sway with it, but it wasn't obnoxiously noisy.

It seemed that Anya's background was far more complicated than Alex had originally thought. In his memories, Anya was just a beautiful schoolgirl, but from what he saw now, her family's influence seemed considerable.

At least on the way here, Alex had recognized quite a few familiar faces, most of them people he often saw on TV.

The fact that a young girl's birthday party could attract so many big names made it clear that Anya was far from ordinary.

As soon as Alex and Emma entered the villa, the concierge noticed them and immediately walked over with a tray.

The tray held various types of champagne and some napkins.

"Thank you," Emma said, not hesitating to take two glasses. She tasted one and then handed the other to Alex.

"It's pretty good. You should try it."

Alex quietly took the glass, but didn't rush to drink. His gaze had been fixed on one direction of the villa since they arrived.

Or rather, it was fixed on one person.

A middle-aged man with a thick beard, a gloomy expression, and a murderous glint in his eyes.

William Butcher.
