Chapter 250: Luring her in slowly 2

''I guess so. Sorry about that. I was just passing and decided to see you before I go. Is everything alright?''

''Yeah, everything is fine. How are you doing?''

''I'm doing well. How about you?''

''I'm also doing great''

''So, your mom? I just have sharp ears''

''You heard my call, right? My mom is coming to D-City next tomorrow. I don't even want to start thinking of how to deal with that. She can be a lot to handle''

''Do you need my help? You remember I said I would help you, right?''

''Yes, I think I might just need your help in dealing with her''

''Call me anytime''

''I don't have your contact. I can't believe I didn't even have your contact in the first place''

''I have yours, I will call you''

''How did you get my number?''

''Your journal, it's on the front page''

''Right, I did put my number on it''

Jenny walked out of the restaurant through the front door and saw them together. She smiled saying, ''oh, hi Ronald''

''Hi, Jenny. How are you doing?''

''I'm doing well. Came to see Kris?''

''Yes, I was passing by and came to see her. I have to drop someone off later on''

''That's fine. Kris, I will go in and start packing. Chloe is gone to pick Brenda and they will be here soon''

''Sure, I will be inside soon''

''Going somewhere with your friends?''

''Yes, today is a day we usually spend together in memory of someone close to us''

''Then, I won't take much of your time. I will call you''

''Alright, bye'' Kristine nodded and went inside after she saw the car of Ronald drive away.

She and Jenny finished packing up and came out of the restaurant wearing black outfits. Chloe pulled over in front of them and rolled down the front windows.

''Ready? Hop in'' she said to the two and they opened the door to the backseat and got inside. Chloe and Brenda also wore black outfits. Brenda was extremely quiet on the drive. She held on tightly to a bunch of flowers in her hands.

Chloe turned into the main road and drove them towards the City's columbarium. They soon got there and she pulled over.

The four got down and walked inside the memorial building where the urn of Brenda's twin sister's ashes were. Three years ago, they had met with an accident while attending Brenda's graduation and her sister died trying to save her. today was her memorial day and each year since then, no matter where they were and how busy they were, they would still make time to visit Bree.

Brenda placed the flowers beside the urn and looked at the picture of herself and Bree that stood next to the urn. Each time she remembered the accident, she would feel a heart wrecking pain in her heart.

''I hope you are doing well over there, Bree. We will continue to miss and love you'' Brenda said and smiled.

''Bree, don't worry about Brenda anymore and be happy. She had us with her and we are taking care of her very well'' Chloe held Brenda's hand and gave her a gentle squeeze.

''That's right Bree, we are here for Brenda and she is doing so well'' Jenny added and placed her shoulder on Brenda's head. Jenny and Bree were best friends and they met through the latter back at their high school.

''Bree will continue to remain this beautiful while we grow old. Look at her, she is still the same and we are so old. Bree, we miss you a lot'' Kristine used her handkerchief to wipe the picture frame beside the urn.

After paying their respects, they left the memorial building and went back to the car. The gloomy mood soon lit up as Brenda announced, ''I'm hungry''

''Me too'' Jenny lifted her hand.

''We too, right Chloe?'' Kristine asked.

''Yes, let's go and get something to eat'' Chloe got into the car and the rest joined her. She drove them to a hot pot joint not far from the memorial building and the got down and went inside.

''Nothing taste better than hot pot, I want it very spicy'' Brenda said leading them inside.

''We will take the spiciest one'' Chloe added.

They got a table at a corner and sat down. The elderly woman walked to them. she smiled saying, ''it has been a while since I last saw you girls''

''Aunt, do you still remember what we like best?'' Kristine asked the woman and she nodded with a smile.

''Off course, Sichuan hot spot''

''Right, and don't go easy on the chili'' Kristine told her.

''On it'' the woman smiled and went over to get them their ingredients for the hot pot.

''Let's bet, who will surrender first?'' Jenny raised her eyebrows looking at Chloe.

''I bet $100 dollars, that Kristine and Brenda will be the first to give up''

''I bet $200 dollars that you will be the first to give up'' Brenda said smugly, looking at Jenny.

''Don't bet on that babe, cos I am so in for spicy today'' Jenny removed $200 dollars from her wallet and placed on the table.

Kristine immediately took the money and stretched her hands at Brenda and Chloe who also gave her $200 dollars each. She smiled and looked at the three of them, ''the last to give up will go home with $600 dollars. Prepare your stomachs by drinking warm water, ladies'' she said to them and poured four disposable cups of water and handed to them before pouring one for herself. They all drunk the water and the woman along with another man brought their ingredients and placed them on the big table.

Kristine looked at the ingredients and rolled the sleeves of her blouse. She was the one going to do the cooking.

''oil, check; ginger, check; bay leaves, check; cinnamon stick, check; red chili, check; Sichuan peppercorns, check; spicy hot pot soup base, check; star anise, check; cloves, chicken stock, sesame paste check; everything is in here".

She started to make the soup base. Making sure the pot was over medium heat, she added the oil and ginger and cooked it until caramelised, making sure it didn't burn. She then added the basic ingredients and cooked for another 2 minutes.

When the fragrance entered the nostrils of the ladies, they closed their eyes savouring it.

Kristine was the one who usually made their hot pot because she was good at it. anytime she made it and the ladies ate, they would always crave for more but to make it more special. They only ate hot spot once a year and that was during Bree's death anniversary. Hot pot was Bree's favourite food so that ate it in memory of her.

''Ladies, get started. It is ready'' Kristine announced and they immediately dipped in their chopsticks that were already in their hands. Kristine chuckled and started to eat with them but she was slow in her eating as compared to the others.

Five minutes in and they were all sniffing with swollen eyes that were almost filled with tears. Kristine waved the money in her hand at them teasingly. She had intentionally added all the dried chili into the hot pot.

Chloe started coughing and Kristine handed her a cup of water, ''eat slowly, the food isn't going anywhere''

''Kris, why I feel that you added more than necessary chili into today's hot pot?'' Jenny asked.

''How do you know that? We only have hot pot once a year, are you sure it isn't your taste buds that can't handle it? You can give up already if you can't handle it''

''You, sly fox'' Jenny muttered and went back to eating but she suddenly banged her chopsticks on the table giving up, 'I give up. if I eat more of this extra, extra, spicy hot pot, I will land myself in the emergency room''

''Well, one out, two more to go'' Kristine folded her arms and leaned back against the chair watching Brenda and Chloe. She had a smug look on her face and one of her brows was raised up.

Jenny stood up and went to the washroom leaving the three of them.

''Aahhh, Chloe moaned suddenly attracting the gazes of the other people that were eating.

''What is wrong with you, Chloe?'' Kristine said to her and Chloe looked at her. Her face was red and there were tears running down her face, ''holy cow. Chloe, I think you are going to end up frying your brain over this hot pot and the $600 dollars''

Brenda coughed and Chloe handed her a cup of water. When she turned to look at Brenda's face, she didn't look any better as her face was red too.

''I give you'' Brenda and Chloe said at the same time and Kristine clapped her hands.

''All of you lost, the $600 dollars belongs to me now'' she said and stood up. Jenny returned after puking.

''I think I am about to fall sick'' she announced.

''Not just you, I feel sick already'' Brenda added.

Kristine looked at their faces, ''should I call the emergency line. I am not sure I can carry all three of you to the hospital''

''I feel sick'' Chloe felt nauseated.

''No, not here. Let's go to the hospital immediately'' Kristine held Chloe's hand and turned to Jenny, ''you are a little sane, can you help Brenda to the car?''

''I will try'' Jenny said and pulled Brenda up. The woman ran to them and held them to the car and Kristine drove off immediately.
