Chapter 1233: Chapter 1232: Lilith

"So what do you think would stop people from being able to live in here? It doesn't exactly seem impossible, y'know?"

Jahi continued to pester the Demon Wolf whenever she was able to do so, and after a few breaks in between each set of questions Lady Fenyras just had to give up as she told the Demoness to just speak, amusing us all at how she had to hold herself back since even she found the waiting boring.

"Civilization is impossible here because permanent settlement would result in death. Yes, some of the biomes that shift around are livable and have a large amount of resources that could support the creation and sustaining of a civilization, but the monsters would tear everything down long before you could establish roots."

The Demoness nodded at the answer her Mom gave, not turning around at all as she remained perched on the wall to finish off her shift, though I knew she was craving to do so thanks to the meal I had prepared after I finished off my shift.

It was a thick, slightly bland yet filling 'gruel' laced with cubes of meat to give it some flavor while the vegetables we had thickened it even more, so while I could have made a real meal Lady Fenyras ordered me to get us accustomed to something that would stick to our ribs for as long as possible and throw the idea of flavor out the window.

So we were all nursing bowls of thick slop that really weren't that bad while also enjoying the warmth of our fire, our noses already blind to the stench of that herb dangling above the flames; Lady Fenyras was still lounging atop the carriage, but now she was being sociable and interacting with us as we made time pass by a little quicker.

"Anything that could manage to settle down permanently in here would be fucking scary, honestly, namely because there is no way to guarantee that when you close your eyes, you would wake up in the same spot. No one knows how this place works, but we do know to be cautious and paranoid to insane degrees.

Nomadic tribes could live in here though, so long as they never separated from one another; you have to always be nearby one another and strong enough to deal with whatever predator prowls around your camp, but it is possible. If they exist, they've never been contacted by us... or let any of us live to tell the tale.

With the existence of those things you met during the crusade though, I don't think it's likely that mortals live here. If they did, it wasn't for long and it definitely wasn't by choice. This place is... it's like a drug. In short bursts it can be a whole lot of fun, even prolonged exposure can be tolerated for a nice kick and some purpose, but too much of it..? Oh, you're dead. Completely fried."

Mopping up the last of my meal with a piece of solid, tasteless bread, I glanced over at the Demon Wolf and raised a brow, though I kept quiet; sadly she was able to catch that and she just growled "What, pup? If you lot are going to keep fucking pestering me at every step, I might as well give in and deal with your blabbering directly; far less irritating that way."

"I didn't say anything, nor was I implying anything."

"Yeah, sure, and your ass isn't fat; stop lying."

That got Jahi to turn around, but the moment her head spun a chunk of bread zipped over and collided with her brow, catching her off guard as she paused for a moment only to roll her eyes when Lady Fenyras said "Don't get mad at me for stating a fact, idiot. Keep watch."

"You're still as insufferable as ever, aren't you? And just as lazy..."

A serene, tranquil voice drifted into the camp, causing us all to shoot up and grab for our weapons as we looked around for the owner of the voice, only to find them standing right above the campfire, hovering in the air like it was natural and unbothered by the flames lapping at their feet.

Skin as black as coal and eyes as red as the flames she was standing on, Lilith looked both menacing and elegant as she stared at the silver eyed Demon Wolf atop the carriage, Lilith's position in the air allowing her to be eye level with Lady Fenyras.

Slender and draped in a robe of brilliant crimson, Lilith radiated regal elegance alongside a honed, sharp aura that prickled everyone around her, and that duality was further showcased by the gorgeous and refined sword hanging on her hip alongside the absolutely gigantic, jagged blade made of rock that was strapped to her back.

Three sets of horns crowned her head, one pair sprouting from the back and curling around to the front like a legitimate crown whilst one curled like rams horns, almost identical to Jahi's; then there was the stereotypical horns that I thought of whenever Demons were mentioned, the two towering spires of bone and keratin pointing straight into the sky to add even more to her height.

Sharp cheekbones emphasized her blazing red eyes, while the greying locks that tumbled down from the available skin atop her head were braided and adorned with beads that

clattered against one another whenever she moved.

"You make it hard to deny that I am relieved you are not one of my descendants, Fenyras. Such raw talent and power painstakingly crafted into a specimen that is so insufferable makes my heart bleed daily... and then I remember my dear old friend claimed you for herself, and I feel less bad."

Another duality presented itself as her pointed and crass words were delivered with such a beautiful voice, and yet I didn't find anything wrong with it as I just nodded slightly, though that again - caught the eyes of the people I didn't want it to catch.Nôv(el)B\\jnn

"On the other hand, I am now in a position of having to watch as my blood is diluted further and further... from one of the more promising branches no less..."

Those blazing rubies made Mom's look downright pathetic considering how much power was seeping out of them with each passing second, and for a moment I forgot how to breathe, only to have a whole lot of relief wash over me as she smiled gently at me and added "That is what I would say if I was a purist still. At least I can be confident in knowing said promising branch retained its taste in women over the years. Beautiful and downright deranged."
