Chapter 142
"……"
"The investors of Demons." Zhuo Yixuan turned back around. She tried to hide the arrogance and contempt in her eyes and continued to appeal to her. "If any one of them get to know you, sky will be the limit for your screenwriting career going forward. And now, I am giving my spot over to you, so you…"
"Are you done talking, Screenwriter Zhuo?" Gu Nian finally decided against letting her finish what she was saying and interjected. "If you are done, can you please return to your spot, Screenwriter Zhuo?"
Zhuo Yixuan was stunned for a few seconds and her look almost turned vicious. "You better think this through clearly. You don't want to regret later – you sure you want to give up on an opportunity like this?"
"I'll be fine. Thank you. It's too much," recited Gu Nian in a very monosyllabic way before she looked up again with her languid eyes. "Now, please go back to your seat."
"….! You are just being foolishly stubborn right now. You will regret later!"
Zhuo Yixuan left in her high heels. The sound coming from them being slammed on the ground suggested that she was so angry she could push her heels into the tiles. She pitter pattered back to her table that was next to theirs.
Gu Nian was finally able to take her seat.
As she unfolded the beautifully folded napkin, she heard a chuckle followed by a deep voice coming from next to her, "Are you sure you won't regret?"
"Regret about?" Gu Nian looked up.
Meeting the nonchalant look on the man, Gu Nian thought about it for two seconds before she figured out what he was referring to. Her lips pursed languidly as were her eyes, "There's nothing to regret about."
"What she told you was the truth. She wasn't kidding."
"Hmm."
Luo Xiu smiled as he looked down, "Then why won't you regret about it?"
"……"
Gu Nian stopped, perturbed.
After a little while, she finally decided that she had no heart to turn down her precious son. "I don't want to speak ill of someone behind their backs… do you really want to know?"
"Mmm."
"Alright." Gu Nian refolded her napkin. "Screenwriter Zhuo is used to relying on external help. That is probably why she perceives that as a great opportunity to rise up. But I don't do that. That's not me."
Luo Xiu's eyes flickered a little and he looked up at her.
Gu Nian didn't notice that. She was still lazily toying with the napkin on her lap.
"My 'sky is the limit' is only defined by how much I want it. I don't need someone handing me their opportunity and definitely not from her. She isn't good enough."
"……"
The smile in those deep, bottomless eyes thickened. And, at the same time, the desire that had been growing progressively with time inside of him was becoming more and more difficult to suppress.
Gu Nian finished adjusting her napkin and noticed that she hadn't heard anything coming from next to her in a while. She looked up at him at loss.
She met those eyes that were so dark that light couldn't even shine inside of them.
Gu Nian was a little surprised.
But she was probably wrong. When she recollected herself and looked again, there were only tenderness in Luo Xiu's eyes.
Baffled, Gu Nian asked, "What is it?"
"Oh, nothing." Luo Xiu turned back and said with a light smile. "I just don't understand why you didn't tell her what you have just told me. She probably still thinks that you will regret about your decision later on."
Gu Nian nodded. Her voice was still languid and light. "That's up to her. I don't care what she thinks."
The smile in Luo Xiu's eyes thickened.
He didn't look at her but asked in an innocent way as though he genuinely wanted to know the answer, "Then why did you tell me?"
Gu Nian replied without missing a beat, "Because Mr. Luo Xiu is special, of course."
"……"
It was not an unexpected answer.
Along with happiness that exceeded expectation.
And, also, desire that he was on the brim of losing control over.
There were too much emotions going through his eyes that Luo Xiu needed to looked down frantically for a second or two just to hide them from her. His emotions were like a full-extended bow. He could almost feel his spirit stretched to a point that it was painful.
But he enjoyed that feeling.
Gu Nian.
He repeated her name over and over again in his mind as though her name could, somehow, filled that abyss inside of him.
