Chapter 58 57. The Battle of the Transcendent (Wave your lucky hands and cast an enthusiastic monthly vote)

Dobin and the others still didn't know that the rascal responsible for their transfer out of Upper District Seven was none other than this "bushy-browed, big-eyed, seemingly honest" fellow right before their eyes.

Given the rank of this group of Patrolling Army, Charlotte scattered the adventurers and transferred them under their command. There was no other option, as Dobin and his colleagues held higher ranks, at a minimum they were fourth or fifth-level privates, and some were even corporals. The adventurers were all first and second-level privates, only suitable to serve under others.

In the Fars Empire's military ranks, from bottom to top, they are: private, corporal, non-commissioned officer, sergeant, Sergeant Major...

Each major rank is divided into five classes, with the fifth class of the lower rank overlapping with the first class of the next major rank. For example, a fifth-level private and a first-level corporal are both ranked forty-ninth.

Just like a fifth-level Clerk and a first-level Clerk Chief are both ranked thirty-seventh.

When Dobin and his group arrived to report, they confounded the adventurers!

After being assigned to work under these "true" members of the Patrolling Army, they suddenly felt as if something wasn't quite right.

"How did it end up like we became real Patrolling Army members?"

"Didn't they say it was a long-term small payment contract?"

"Right, and his name isn't even Qian Nan."

"Big liar!"

Today, Charlotte also received his salary, which was higher than everyone else's. The financially robust chief of the Patrolling Army immediately declared that he would host a welcoming party to wash the dust off the road for his new colleagues.

Dobin volunteered to lead seven or eight colleagues out to make purchases and soon returned with a great load of food and barley wine.

The office of the Patrolling Army in Lucavaro District might have been bustling for the first time; whether adventurers or newly transferred Patrolling Army members, all were influenced by the atmosphere, and after a few drinks of barley wine, everyone warmed up to each other.

Charlotte didn't particularly enjoy this kind of barley wine, but its advantage lay in being cheap and widely available on the market, making it easy to procure.

If it were fruit wine instead, not only would it be more expensive, but without being in a bustling place like Elysian Pastoral Street, it would be difficult to purchase enough for over two hundred people to drink.

After drinking a few glasses, he was looking for an opportunity to "retire early", then arrange to meet with Anne and watch an opera, when suddenly he felt a twitch in his brow—the Insight Ability automatically activated, not only enveloping the entire office but also expanding outward, allowing him to see a man in hunting attire, unarmed, yet radiating an aura of deadly intent, striding into the Patrolling Army's territory.

"Aubrey Barrington Atwood!?"

Currently, Charlotte only had two enemies: one was the former head of Kilmainham Prison, Magru Teller, who was now locked up in jail, and the other was the Liemar Detective Agency, as he had, after all, killed eight of their detectives.

Since returning to Strasbourg, he had inquired many times about information regarding the Liemar Detective Agency and it seemed that the formidable head of the agency, Aubrey Barrington Atwood, had this very appearance.

In an instant, Charlotte made a wise choice; he gave up on the Vampiric Hand Axe and also the Blood Rose—although the Blood Rose brought him the swordsmanship of the Asiluo Clan, he still didn't believe that a Fourth Order Transcendent could contend with a High Order one. Instead, he chose the signature product from one of the Fars Empire's Six Great Alchemy Workshops, the Hawkwell Workshop—the Antispace sniper rifle.

Charles had no talent for close combat, but he was somewhat accomplished in shooting, as he knelt on one knee and set up the Antispace sniper rifle in a standard shooting position, loading it with bullets.

Dobin and the others didn't know why he suddenly reacted like this, but they quickly formed a circle, facing the danger, their first priority was self-preservation, an old tradition of the Patrolling Army.

The man clad in hunting gear, unarmed but with a menacing aura, seemed to sense something and stopped in his tracks just before entering the shooting range, turning on his heel without hesitation and walking away.

A quarter of an hour later, Charles, drenched in cold sweat, put away the Antispace sniper rifle, uncertain whether he would have lived or died if the man had barged in.

Perhaps his Magic-Breaking Bombshell Bullet would have blown the opponent to smithereens, or perhaps the opponent might have resisted the shot, or dodged the bullet. Once a High Order Transcendent got too close, he would have no chance of surviving.

"If only I were in Machu Picchu!"

"Or if I could get Lord Leo out, he would probably be able to handle this guy. The only problem is, Lord Leo wouldn't listen to me!"Nôv(el)B\\jnn

"I wonder if he saw through my true identity? If he did, I'm afraid he'll want to kill me the next time we meet."

Charles removed the bullets and remolded the rifle back into his alchemy cane. The Magic-Breaking Bombshell Bullets were too heavy, and he only carried three with him at all times. With the speed of a High Order Transcendent, he probably only had the chance to fire three shots, any more bullets would be useless.

He said to Dobin, "You take charge of the daily affairs of the Lucavaro District Patrolling Army, I've got some matters to attend to."

Dobin also sensed that something big seemed to be about to happen. Although nothing came of it in the end, he knew Charles must have urgent business to deal with.

While he couldn't intervene in a battle between Transcendents, taking over the affairs of the Patrolling Army was somewhat beyond his wildest dreams. Dobin, confident in his own abilities and always suppressed by foolish superiors, believed that without constraints, he could maintain law and order in a district and allow the residents to live in peace and happiness.

With a somber expression, Charles left the Patrolling Army's office.

Although he knew that he had made enemies with the Liemar Agency, he was after all a government official and didn't expect the Liemar Agency would send someone again.

But the recent incident made him realize that this was a society with little regard for law, evoking a strong sense of crisis in him.

Not daring to be careless, Charles activated his Insight, but didn't sense any danger along the way.

When he passed through the Picardy District, he didn't return to Elysian Pastoral Street No. 58, but instead crossed the Picardy District to go to the Cat Detective Agency at No. 22 Madile Street in Alcatraz District.

Only a Transcendent could combat another Transcendent, and with his sister Menier Menilman joining a certain naval fleet, the only help from the Supernatural World he could find was the Cat Elf Detective, Vinnie Yarseno.

Alcatraz District was a typical residential area, full of slightly old but elegant and well-designed houses, giving the area a very homely atmosphere.

The middle-class of Strasbourg resided here, with a high demand for security. Since the Patrolling Army was subpar, the demand for private detectives was high in this district. Three out of the seven major detective agencies were located in Alcatraz District. Additionally, there were twenty to thirty smaller detective agencies, making it a detective's paradise.

The Cat Detective Agency at No. 22 Madile Street was a building with a distinctive Sherlock-era style, with three stories and about twenty to thirty rooms per floor. As a female-led detective agency, the Cat Detective Agency wasn't as large as the Liemar Detective Agency, but Miss Yarseno also employed nearly a hundred people, with twenty to thirty being official detectives.
